The world is a beautiful place, but unfortunately most people are limited to the place where their home is. The home is where the heart is, but it is also where all of the food, supplies, and running water is as well. Leaving the comfort of the home for an extended period of time is often untenable.

We aim to change that by offering RVs at affordable costs. This enables more families to not only discover how wonderful the world truly is but it also enables them to spend more valuable time with each other. We think that those are two goals worth pursuing.

Top DIY Tips to Maintain Your RV

Mature couple on road, man changing tire in motor home, woman using mobile phone

A recreational vehicle, or RV, is a great way of traveling the country, taking in the sights, while still in the comfort of a home on wheels. They are often reliable for long distance transportation, making them ideal for road trips. However, after some time of use, eventually an RV can start to break down, like any other motor vehicle would. Because of this, it is vital to ensure that you properly maintain your RV so that it can last for a long time. Without that, you may end up purchasing a new one every few years or so. It is far more economical to keep up with maintenance. With that in mind, here are some of the best ways that RV owners can keep moving forward.

Keep Things Moving Well

Oftentimes, one of the biggest enemies of an RV is rust and stickiness. Not only in the engine components but also in the general parts of the interior. Keeping all of the moving parts in the vehicle lubricated is in your best interests. Use a small amount to lubricate any and all of the hinges, joints, locks, and the like. If you have some available, apply lubricant that resists dirt and grime buildup. In the long run, that should work the best.  You should also seriously consider getting an onboard diagnostic scanner to understand what’s happening under the hood and better take care of your rig.  If you need education around these highly useful devices and to get a good one, these obd2 scanners are the best.

Keep Things Tight

With all of the time spent out on the road, RVs are often exposed to jostling and bumping around that can loosen some components in the vehicle. Should you notice this happening in your RV, use a screwdriver to tighten any and all screws that are present in the vehicle. This preventative maintenance could save you a lot of headaches in the future. Should you have any external loose objects on your RV, take extra care in checking and maintaining those, as they are a potential safety hazard should they come loose.

Keep Your Tires Inflated

A popped tire is easily one of the worst misfortunes that could befall a trip, because it means time spent out in the sun doing manual labor. Very few people enjoy doing that. While ensuring that you have good tire pressure will not prevent a blown tire, it does go a long way towards making them last for as long as possible. Before you head out on a trip, be sure to do a full check on your tires to ensure that they are safe to drive on. Makes sure that all of the lug nuts on your tires are tightened to the optimum amount.

Keep Your Tanks Clean

One of the most common issues with RVs after some time is that the water can start to smell bad. Of course, this is due to bacteria getting into the tanks. This requires you to sanitize the water system every so often. Obviously it depends on how often you use it, but look to flush and clean the fresh water system out every two or three months. Probably the most effective way of doing this is by running a bleach and water softener mixture through the water system. This scrubs it, sanitizes it, and helps the water tanks to smell fresh.

Keep Moving Forward

If you follow these basic tips, your RV should last for many years to come. You should be able to keep driving it, keep seeing sights, and keep making memories with your family as long and as often as you wish. Not only that, but properly maintaining your RV like this also helps it to keep its market value, letting you upgrade more easily should you so choose.
